How many countries have you visited?

Most people guess. CountryVisit counts. Import the photos from your trips and every country with a geotagged photo is lit on the map and added to your counter. The number in Your world so far is out of 195: the 193 United Nations member states plus the two observer states. Territories such as Puerto Rico, Hong Kong or Greenland light up too, and they appear in the checklist below, but they are not counted as countries.

Alongside the country counter you get a region counter (US states, Canadian provinces, Japanese prefectures and so on), the share of the world you have covered, the continents you have reached, your northernmost photo and the country you photograph most. All of it is computed from the photos, so the answer to “how many countries have I been to” is whatever your camera roll proves.

Track the US states you’ve been to

Switch the map to Regions and the United States breaks into its 50 states. A photo taken in Austin lights Texas; a road trip through the Southwest lights Arizona, Utah and Colorado. The region counter tells you how many states you have been to, and the states page has the full checklist.

How it works

Point it at your photos. Choose a folder on your computer, pick photos from your phone’s library, or send a whole year from your iPhone with the Shortcut. JPEG, HEIC, PNG, WebP and RAW files all work.

The GPS is read on your device. Cameras and phones store the coordinates of each shot in the photo’s EXIF data. CountryVisit reads that field in your browser and matches it against country and region boundaries. The photo itself is never sent anywhere.

Your map lights up. Countries fill in as photos are matched. Click a lit country to drill into its regions, click a point to see the photo, or go fullscreen to show the whole thing off.

Screenshots, downloaded images and photos shared through most messaging apps have their location stripped, so they will not light anything. Originals from your camera roll do.

Your photos never leave your device

Everything happens in the browser tab. The photo files are opened locally, only the EXIF header is read, and the coordinates are matched against boundary data that is downloaded to your device. No photo, no thumbnail and no coordinate is sent to a server unless you sign in and choose to back up your footprints, and even then the backup holds coordinates and tiny thumbnails, never the originals.

Your map is stored in the browser’s own database, so it is still there when you come back. Clearing the map or the local data removes it completely; there is nothing to delete on our side.

Common questions

Is CountryVisit free?

Yes. The map, the counters, the US states view and the iPhone Shortcut are free. An optional account lets you back up your footprints to the cloud and restore them on another device.

Do I have to upload my photos?

No. Photos are read in your browser. Only the GPS coordinates inside the file are used, and they stay on your device unless you turn on cloud backup.

Which photos count?

Any photo whose file still carries location data: originals from an iPhone or Android camera roll, and RAW or JPEG files from a camera with GPS. Screenshots and most images received in chat apps have no location and are skipped.

Why does it say 195 countries?

195 is the 193 UN member states plus Vatican City and Palestine. Territories light up on the map and appear in the checklist, but they are not counted as countries.

Can I see US states, not just countries?

Yes. Switch the map to Regions, or open the states I’ve been to map. The same works for Canadian provinces, Australian states, Japanese prefectures and other first-level regions.

How do I import a whole year from my iPhone?

Install the CountryVisit Shortcut, pick a year on this page, then run the Shortcut from the Safari share sheet. It sends the coordinates month by month and resumes where it stopped.

Can I share my map?

Use fullscreen for a clean view and take a screenshot. Shareable links are on the way.

What happens if I clear my browser data?

The map is stored in the browser, so clearing site data removes it. Back it up with an account first, or simply import the photos again; the cache makes a re-import fast.
