# CountryVisit

> CountryVisit is a free countries visited map that fills itself in from the GPS in your photos. It runs in the browser: photos are read locally, only their coordinates are matched to country and region boundaries, and nothing is uploaded. It also tracks US states and other first-level regions, counts countries out of 195, and keeps milestones.

## Facts

- Photos are read locally in the browser. Original photos never leave the device; nothing is uploaded.
- Only geotagged originals count; screenshots and most images shared through chat apps have no location data.
- Countries are counted out of 195 (193 UN member states plus Vatican City and Palestine). Territories light up on the map and appear in the checklist but are not counted as countries.
- The Regions view shows US states, Canadian provinces, Australian states, Japanese prefectures and other first-level regions.
- An optional account offers manual cloud backup of footprints (coordinates and small thumbnails), never the original photos.
- Boundary data comes from geoBoundaries (CC BY 4.0); the map renders with MapLibre GL.
